The Quest to build a practical model putting Patients & Savings to health care first!
A new driven Biotech and health care model for adding much needed competition to drive progress (In both Industrial & Social Monopolies )
What's so Unique about this?
Separating shareholder profit from Cancer R&D (While actively retaining competition to drive progress) opens up new possibilities.
Being free to try treating patients with no other options, such as testing newly developed treatments years before they'd become available, Currently companies with drugs which may have potential for some patients won't normally risk negative results/publicity outside of limited trials. yet especially for patients with no other good options, using extracted live samples of patient cells to pre-test a range of treatments on could lead to life saving interventions. (Treatments given with much more intensive assessment and monitoring than is practical at present)
Experiments in pretesting a wide rage of already licensed treatments on "patient specific" live cell samples has the potential to rapidly speed research . The development of cell processing technology & protocols also has potential to speed R&D in conditions beyond cancer while reducing the need for many animal experiments too.
A need driven quest to dramatically reduce the vast guesswork in monitoring, grading and treating Cancers "the difference between life & death for patients" while saving unnecessary waste.
Also see (CHESS) a cause focused model for teamwork, and a new model of NHS partner focused on speeding advances and savings, with practical operational restrictions and monitoring to ensure these remain the focus as opposed to excessive profiting from the NHS (unlike like so many current NHS partners)
Dramatically reducing the guesswork in cancer by bringing a system into production which a colleague and I "with the help of a few volunteers along the way" have passionately worked on for years.
One of it's benefits (There are several) is delivering a low cost means to pre-test multiple cancer drugs on live cells cultured from patient samples, "before administering these expensive drugs to patients"
Presently, outside of some trials, using live cells is a process seen as to time consuming and difficult, besides the waste in lives, it leaves much guess work in how effective any of the current extremely expensive drugs may be for any given individual patient.
Enabling simpler faster methods would initially enable many more experiments to be carried out on cancer. As with all cell biology, cancer is complex, there's much more to learn before we can save more patients. However, after years of focus on the challenges we're certain we have components to not only speed up that journey, but to speed knowledge across all areas where cell culture is used in research. Heart disease, Alzheimer’s, Diabetes etc.
One of the areas some of our components would be used in is semi-automated Cell Culture.
Some examples of the current expensive automated Cell Culture systems used mostly in research. What we've been working on has several components which far exceed the capabilities of these systems.
It's in everyone's interest we succeed in making headway. We want to get moving, without obstruction or delay.
Why the large local derelict FVS site is needed. A health care village (within a village) See Images & Video (some taken a few years ago)
Besides intensive patient assessment, treatment & monitoring. The large site (near the local hospital )is needed for several laboratories high precision engineering & production facilities plus Cryogenic freezing of samples.
Significant space is needed for the R&D, device prototyping, Laboratories, patient treatment & intensive monitoring (Medical Imaging scanners PET, MRI etc) Blood & Urine analysis (measuring drug absorption).
Laboratories & R&D facing the central court yards, were staff have view of the actual patients who's lives depend on progress, also sharing their dining & coffee spaces with some of those patients "providing extra incentive to drive progress"
Additional good reasons to help us.
Generating many jobs selling better lower cost devices into the NHS along with exports.
Local Community - Retaining sections such as the hall & rooms for a youth FabLab facility & sharing areas to build a sustainable heart for the local community.
An ambitious Cancer Initiative a biomed graduate and myself had given more than ten years to (Countless hours on a need driven endeavour motivated when my mother became the latest person in my life to be diagnosed with cancer) I was desperate to find a way to fund a new type of team to help speed development of methods and devices to enable live samples of patient specific Tumour cells to be used to pre-test treatments on. Approaches currently not used for patients due to many technical challenges and expenses.
When growing tissue cultures outside the body some of the limiting factors include:
Being able to keep the cells free from contamination (Without the body's immune system, the slightest spec of mould from the air is enough to destroy the cell culture, outgrowing the cells etc.)
Not being able to grow cells into formations which better represent tumours, various fickly in vitro cell culture processes are used in the formation of 2D flat mono-layers of cells and 3d tumour Spheroids very tiny clusters of cells which without the formation of micro capillaries can’t be kept alive long before developing necrotic cores (The little clusters of cells die from the inside due to lack of nutrient flow & other factors.)
A presentation explaining the push on the difficult challenge of separating CTC's which occur at cell ratios which of approximately 1:600,000,000 - 1:Billion
The most well known of the first available Liquid Biopsy products is CellSearch, as with the more recent ctDND Liquid Biopsy, tests are still expensive, therefore these imperfect but important advanced tests to build more accurate detail for patients and cancer research teams are not widely available.
A useful presentation using live cells and explaining some of the observable differences.
Note these cells are mostly in the common single flat layer (often referred to as 2D cell culture), used for imaging individual cells. Besides implanting cells in mice which have had their immune systems weakened (Xenografts), other forms of 3D cell culture methods exist, 3d Gel Cultures, Hanging drop Cultures, etc. Each method has its strengths & weaknesses. The special Gel's and cell growth cocktails are often very expensive.
Unfortunately a combination of destructive stubborn contests and failings in civil service would limit the ability to push for these measures which could have helped relieve pressure on the local hospital too.
No health service in the world can cope when demand far exceeds capacity including the NHS, extraordinary challenges require swift extraordinary actions! With COVID-19 cutting red tape & supporting teamwork to attempt swift extraordinary actions is essential without delays!
With the COVID-19 Emergency government has announced its considering buying beds in private hospitals. Other countries are even using Medical Ships. I'd like the keys to the large derelict site we've long wanted to put laboratories & isolation wards in for an ambitious ethically driven cancer project which a bio-med graduate & I have given over a decade to.
Care in the community (Elderly Care) will likely be one of the first areas to be overrun. There are also shortages on medical Ventilators, & many other products & services. With support the long standing plans, large derelict building & site & we've long wanted for Rapid Explore (our ambitious ethically driven cancer project) could be adapted to help in this emergency.
This site located less than 1 mile from the main hospital (Connected by a straight stretch of road) could be valuable in the battle, I've begun to request initial minimal assistance to remove basic obstacles to begin immediate minimal preparation. Overcoming bureaucracy & encouraging people to work together (or at least not to get in the way) are what i fear most at this point.
When it comes to doing anything fast or efficiently Social Monopolies are notorious for being top heavy, laden with bureaucracy & red tape. Despite already having put great effort into this & having volunteers (Of the non-hoodie verity) to help, I have no doubt many naysayers will not go out of their way. Hopefully some will get behind this without delay. If made essential, i'll publish a log of efforts & obstacles to see if others can help.
