Sir Tim was actually a personal inspiration to me, as despite his status, early in the vastly ambitious quest to reduce the guesswork in cancer, (around 2009) when trying to find answers to questions that experts of lesser status than Sir Tim wouldn't even attempt to help with, I'd ended up being lucky enough to get a chance to talk to him, he kindly took the time. In a lengthy conversation he helped bring clarity, and gave me the confidence not to be distracted by several dead ends in cancer which countless papers had been published on. such as our "unmodified" immune systems having any significant role in cancer.
Later as an anti-tribalist (Someone not so hindered by primitive Tribal loyalties & focused on ambitious important goals) I was horrified to see Tim was the subject of a fleeting global media circus after a joke he'd made while giving a talk was jumped upon framed as been sexist by tribal feminists & several journalists acting as humour police. Despite his global contributions to woman with cancer, woman in science & respect from many female scientists who knew him, few news agencies paused to before running with what amounted to a circus of destructive defamation .

SYRIA
Like so many historical conflicts the Genocide in Syria could have been limited or avoided if not for catastrophic failings which prevented the Syrian dictator Assad from being deterred. In battles between democracy and the dictators fighting the advance of democracy for their very survival many conflicts involve destructive dictator assisted tribal extremists. Some of those have paid the heaviest of prices.
With my extensive secondary interest in the mechanisms of cruel destructive conflicts. The Syrian conflict is one I'd followed closely even contributing to open source investigations. From reading many of the reports & seeing lots of the horrific videos of the carnage (which with hindsight I wouldn't recommend to just anyone, those left scars) I was in no doubt about the need for smarter approaches to deter the slaughter in these conflicts. which also have wider geopolitical impacts which are far from over.

The death of James in suspicious circumstances
James was a former Army officer who gave everything to try and help alleviate the barbaric suffering. The Syrian rescue organisation he helped found operated in the most dangerous brutal war zone in the world, in the thick of constant indiscriminate barrel bomb attacks (often intentionally targeting medical facilities)
Yet the extensive undeterred propaganda media of dictatorships and their essential interface partners ( anti-western Marxist fronts & activists) managed to confuse & even convince many in the west that the hell on earth he and his colleagues dealt with everyday was staged by western democracies.
Some attribute his death to suicide (a fall from a low balcony) others have their doubts about that. for good reasons. I personally have my doubts that a man like James with his passion to help would have thrown in the towel.
However he was under pressures.
on the extreme prolonged psychological torture and stress he faced relentless character assassination via propaganda on broadcast & social media. And the many naïve useful idiots within populations.
